A last minute try from Tom Ansen gave Bridgend Blue Bulls a win in a thrilling pre-season friendly against a South East Wales Student select at Pyle RFC on Sunday.

Played on a cold muddy surface, it will be an entirely different scenario for the Bulls when they take on London Chargers on a 4G pitch in the Challenge Cup on January 28th, but this game will have helped their players shake off a few cobwebs and challenge themselves against students who are the middle of their playing season.
An error in the Bulls defence gave the Students the lead on 15 minutes with Kyle Garnett running over from following a scrum. Daf Green converted.
But Bridgend went into half-time 14-6 to the good after three well-worked tries.
First, on 20 minutes, Nathan Hawkins ran over after a good passing move. Gareth Howells missed the kick.
A little over ten minutes after that, Thomas Pascoe was in at the corner to give Bridgend an 8-4 lead. Again Howells failed to convert.
And just before the interval, Josh Dixon, who had just on as a sub, ran over for Bridgend's third which Hawkins improved.
The Students again drew first blood in the second half with Callum Jenkins going in under the sticks and Green converting to put the scores back to 14-12.
But five minutes after that, Dale Wood made a strong run, with defenders crashing off him and were unable to prevent him scoring in the corner.
The try went unconverted and the Students levelled on the hour with George James scoring and once again making it easy for Green to convert as he was just left of the posts.
The scores were level at 18-all for under three minutes. Scott Walters dived through a crowd of players to give Bulls the lead back with Joe Symons converting.
With three minutes to go, Jordan Hylton made a clean break, sprinting 60 metres, outrunning his markers, collapsing with the ball under the sticks with Green again adding the extras to make it 24-all.
But Bridgend weren’t finished yet and the last move of the game saw Ansen waltz round the Student defence for the winner.
